Today is a day to give thanks and celebrate. The California Catholic Conference of Bishops profoundly welcomes the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobb’s v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which has affirmed our dearly held belief that life is precious, valuable, and should be protected, and that states have a compelling interest to protect the unborn and limit abortion. This has been our prayer, the Church’s prayer, for the last 50 years.

While we celebrate this decision - the culmination of prayer and decades of legislative advocacy, life-affirming events, committing time and resources to pregnancy centers, and walking with families facing an unplanned pregnancy – in many ways, our work has just begun.

ACT NOW-  Senate Constitutional Amendment 10

The state Senate approved Senate Constitutional Amendment 10 in a 29-7 vote. The bill moves to the state Assembly where two-thirds of lawmakers must approve it by June 30.

If approved, the matter will go before California voters in November. The bill would amend California's constitution to prohibit the state from "denying or interfering with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions," according to the bill's text.

Amidst the aggressive abortion suite of bills that has made its way through the California legislature, SCA 10 is the single most consequential and momentous measure that will be voted on in California history.  If Senate Constitutional Amendment 10 passes, California will become the abortion sanctuary destination of the nation.

We have a responsibility to protect women and children.

To help stop the California abortion amendment, call or send a letter to your State Assembly Member.

CA Bishops Oppose CA Constitutional Amendment to Protect Abortion

The California Catholic Conference vehemently opposes Senate Constitutional Amendment (SCA) 10, which looks to enshrine the most extreme forms of abortion into the California Constitution. We believe in protecting life at every age in every stage. We are extremely troubled by the language in SCA 10, which is so broad and unrestrictive that it would encourage and protect even late-term abortions, which most Californians oppose. We also fear the boundless scope of this proposed amendment, which asserts a new constitutional right to “reproductive freedom” but does not define what that means.

This constitutional amendment, as written, will legalize and protect abortion up to the point just prior to delivery. It is distressing that so many California legislators would sign their names to legislation that allows the taking of a human life moments before birth.  In this regard, SCA 10 would more closely align California with the extreme abortion policies of only a few countries rather than those of the majority of western democracies, which do not allow late-term abortions.

The sad reality is that California already has some of the most accommodating abortion laws and services in the nation.  And by providing extensive funding for abortion services without any corresponding equitable funding for pregnant women and mothers, the state exercises a destructive, coercive power in favor of ending innocent lives. Enshrining this amendment’s language into the constitution will extend the danger of coercive abortion to babies with unquestioned viability.

The California Catholic Conference will be actively engaged in opposing the upcoming ballot initiative and asking the state’s 12 million Catholics to work to raise awareness and vigorous opposition in our dioceses, parishes, and communities.

California Bishops Commit to Working for Better Futures for California’s Women, Children and Families.

“With Pope Francis, we believe that abortion attacks the “sacredness of human life,[1]” and that “it is not ‘progressive’ to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life.[2]” At this pivotal moment, we, the Bishops of the Dioceses of California, commit to a vision for our state that honors women with life-affirming support and practical resources so that all families can thrive, and so that no woman feels trapped into the devastating decision to end a life by abortion.”

Bishop Chairmen Respond to Senate Vote on Extreme Abortion on Demand Bill

“More than 60 million unborn children have already lost their lives to abortion, and countless women suffer from the physical and emotional trauma of abortion. This radical bill would add millions more to that tragic toll.  As a nation built on the recognition that every human being is endowed by its Creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we implore Congress to stop pushing abortion as a solution to the needs of women and young girls, and instead embrace public policy that fully respects and facilitates these rights and the needs of both mother and child.”
