December 2023:
What can one say about Advent and its mystery? Few words are uttered by the major characters leading up to Jesus’ birth. Mary speaks her “fiat” and later proclaims the “Magnificat” when she meets Elizabeth. Then Elizabeth briefly welcomes Mary. Joseph has no words. Zachary has a brief exchange with the Angel, is struck mute, and later, after confirming his son’s name as John, speaks his “Benedictus”. The shepherds have no lines. Thus Advent is a quiet time of preparation. Perhaps in my Advent silence I can be brave enough to know my own desires and seek to find God’s will for me. Like Joseph, in Advent silence may I hear what God wishes me to do, to become in His name.
